My experiences with local businesses in New Zealand

without comments

Earlier this year, I needed to get rid of an old car that I had lying around in the driveway for a long time. It was an old red Lada and I totally fell in love with it when I bought it off a workmate’s grandfather a year or so ago but I never had the motivation or mechanical know-how to get her running again. After a fairly scary drive home in the Russian beast, she just sat in the driveway looking sad.

Everyone that came to our place would comment that the car looked really cool but nobody seemed too keen to take it off my hands. When we were looking at moving house, it was time to do something about the car because our old flatmate wouldn’t have been too happy about it staying there after we were gone!

I talked to a friend who deals with old vehicles (mostly Japanese vehicles I think) and he suggested that I call a few car wreckers and see if I could get it taken away. I just did a search online and gave a few places a call. They were all pretty helpful and I could have gone with any of them. Anyway, here’s the rundown on my experiences with them.

Lada that I sold to car wreckers in Wellington

My old car was just like this one – totally awesome but hopelessly unreliable!

First car wreckers I called

These guys were helpful and the person I spoke to was friendly but I decided to to continue to call some others to see if I could get a better quote. Even though I didn’t go ahead with using them, I would feel comfortable recommending them to a friend. Click here to visit the Car Wreckers Wellington website.

Second car wreckers I called

The second company I called were also pretty easy to deal with. The freephone number went straight through to one of the guys on their team and he just asked a few questions about the vehicle and where I was based to arrange pickup. They offer free pickups and will pay for the car as well which I thought was pretty cool. Third car wreckers – third time lucky!

I was really impressed with the third company I called. Just like the other two, they were really friendly on the phone and it was easy to book the pickup for the vehicle. The thing that edged them out over the other two was how quickly they could come to pick up the vehicle and they were offering more money for the car as well. Check out the Parts Export Wellington car wreckers site here for more info on these guys. You can get a quote online with their cash for cars quote form – pretty cool if you don’t want to call.

What if you need a car wrecker that isn’t in Wellington?

My recommendation would be to just do a Google search. I really can’t be bothered with using the Yellow pages but if you don’t have access to the net, I guess there must be car wreckers that advertise in there. If you’re in Auckland, my cousin has used these Auckland car wreckers and this company and he said they were both good.

There’s heaps of info out there on car wrecking if you’re wanting to do a bit more research before you decide to wreck your car. Check out Wikipedia or just do a Google search like I would!
